Relaxing Like the Old Folks

For my birthday and Mother's Day this month, I asked Mario to send me away for the weekend with my friend Janette to a place called Villa Elisa. This is one of the many cities in the bordering province that has built vacation complexes around the thermal springs found deep beneath the earth. There isn't technically a minimum age to get in, but let's just say the average age is about 75 and basically what you do is loaf around in various pools of distinct temperatures all day. Supposedly all the minerals in the water are good for your health, but all I know is it was about the most relaxing weekend ever. This is what we did:

went on a bike ride through the little town and along the country roads.
wore my bathrobe around all day
lounged around in the pools, read two books and 4 magazines, listened to a lot of NPR on my iPod, got a pedicure, a facial and a body scrub.

I am now well rested, well read, and well hydrated. Good thing it was only two days or I could have been really well bored.

And just because they are so cute, here and Mario and Gabe at the driving range.

The "other" Sierras

If you continue south from the Sierras in California....waaaaaaay south.... you reach the Sierras in Argentina. Argentina, as part of the Americas, also celebrates Columbus' founding/invasion of this continent and thus last Monday we had a holiday. Sometime around Friday morning, we decided to go visit our friends the Azcuy's in the province of Cordoba, soon to be home to a new LDS temple. They live in Unquillo, home of David Nalbandian if you follow tennis, in what is known as the "sierras chicas" and are surrounded by beauty. When we got there on Saturday it was stiffling hot, so we took the kids to the stream to let them play.
Gabe played in the sand with some not-so-age-appropriate toys.

Gabe got to see real live horses instead of just in books.

We delighted in the beauty of the earth.
Relaxed with our families

drank mate (I don't normally drink mate, but it was hot and I was cold so I participated in this most Argentine of frienship rituals.)

watched Gabe throw rocks in various bodies of water.

spontaneously hiked with Gabe carried thrown over Adan's shoulders
Drove with all the girls in one car and boys in the other.
discovered that both Adan and Mario think posing for ridiculous photos is the most fun ever.

as you can see, Mario is quite a bit bigger than Adan, and in their house Mario is their icon the the biggest, tallest, strongest man ever. Hilarious.
and watched the Azcuy kids be wonderful, kind and entertaining for Gabe.
aaron, gabe, tomy, agustina

Thanks for a great weekend, let's do it again soon!!

Birthday Review

Turning 29 was pretty nice. My wonderful sister is keeping me fashionable with this fantastic jacket:
My family is moving my technology to the current century with my very first one of these:
(what, yours didn't arrive to you already loaded with music?? You're getting gipped big time!!)
Susana made lunch, Mario gave me a professional - in his office and taking a patient's time slot - massage, and then these great ladies had a surprise party for me.
(my American girlfriends - Susan, Gordana, Me, Stephanie, Janette)
An excellent day.

While You Were Out - Mother In Law Edition

I haven't been blogging, because I've been busy. Susana went to Chile this weekend to visit Esteban and family, and as soon as she was out the door last Friday morning Mario called me and I headed over to re-do her kitchen while she was gone to surprise her for Mother's Day - which is in October in Argentina, don't ask why they can't have it in May with the rest of the world, they just like to be difficult.

Here are the before pictures, but it's not a real before because I forgot the camera in the morning so this is after 5 hours of removing and cleaning. Biggest problem in this kitchen is lack of light, accentuated by dark cabinetry and dark ambered colored glass blocks.
The darkness was accented by pale pink accents on the walls and this old piece of furniture from Deo's medical office painted the same pink. Here you can get glimpses of what the kitchen was like before my 5 hours of object removal. I was limited to all superficial changes - i.e. tearing out the glass blocks and replacing them along with the floor was out, and we wanted to refinish the cupboards but Deo veteod that as well. So, 5 days, 50 trips to paint stores, accessory stores, etc. and numerous budget revisions later, Susana returned to:
all freshly painted walls and furniture. Lots of removed items (mainly plastic picture frames) NOT returned, and curtains covering the window and the amber glass blocks. I wanted to paint the back splash with special tile paint, but I tried it on some hidden tiles and it didn't look great, so I had to leave it. Susana also has a large collection of decorative plates that used to be on the wall in what is Mario's consulting room but we removed. So we re-hung them up the staircase. I also made her a photo collage, painted her clock green and cleaned up the bookcase, getting baskets for kids' art materials and Deo's institute class preparation materials. I told Deo where I put all his stuff and he said "It's okay, I'll arrange it later" and Mario rebuked "dad, it IS arranged!" We'll see if it lasts. There are still a few details to finish, and we're lobbying Deo to buy her new kitchen chairs for her birthday next month, but overall it's a huge improvement.
And now I'm exhausted. Good thing it's my birthday tomorrow so I can refuse to cook, clean, or anything else!

Importing Culture

Thanks to the heroic efforts of Annette and Ashley, Halloween will happen in Rosario. I convinced Mario to have a ward party, the young women are on board to do the haunted house, big posters announcing the costume party have been up in the church for two weeks, and I regularly harrass the members asking them if they've come up with their costume yet.

To make it complete, my mom sent:

  • 11 bags of spider web
  • two creepy cloths
  • 144 black spider rings
  • 50 glow-in-the-dark gummy skelatons
  • 1 large glow-in-the-dark hanging skelaton
  • two dozen plastic eyeballs
  • a witch's nose
  • two sets of green teeth
  • halloween makeup
  • pirate accessories for Mario
  • 6 feather boas to make the cutest parrot costume ever for Gabe
  • one pattern for above stated costume
  • one extra pattern for when I was contemplating a monkey theme
  • fake gold coins so I can be the pirate's treasure
  • one large costco bag of halloween candy that may or may not have been entirely consumed already. I'm not saying.

Want an eyeball??? You're invited to our party!

THANKS MOM AND ASHLEY!!!!

Here I'm sharing important cultural items like candy corn and People Magazine with Gabe. I don't think he's appreciating them fully.

In addition, Lindsay contributed a stack of US and Glamor magazines so I can learn important things like not only is the economy going to pot in the US, but fashion as well. ARE YOU KIDDING ME Katie Holmes, etc. with those baggy pegged jeans????

Lindsay also sent me the cutest jacket EVER, which will be featured in a later post. Oh how I love my deliveries!!

Peeping Mario

A couple of weeks ago they had a free activity day for kids at the monument to the flag, so I coerced Mario into going with Gabe and I. When we got there, the activity was pretty cool but really for kids older than Gabe, so we just ended up walking around and letting Gabe play in the fountains, which he loved.

While we were hanging out, Mario found a pair of binoculars someone had left. We waited around for a while to see if the owner would show up, and then left a note saying if you lost something we found it, so call and we'll return it, but no one ever called. So Mario took them home and later that night I found him in the kitchen window...
The lights were off, the light you see is from my flash. What's that they say about marrying someone like your father???? (my dad keeps binoculars in his car, supposedly for bird sighting while fishing...)
