The Baby Gear Debate

So, we are appraoching the high chair stage of life, and I need input. What's really important?

- sitting up straight vs. reclined in a super soft chair for younger babies?
- sitting up at the table with his parents so he learns to eat like an adult, and gets to interact with us or having a tray in the middle and not being able to grab things at the table and meal time is more relaxing for us?
- a tray with a lip for spills or just using the table top and getting rid of one more thing to clean?
-big, ugly and plastic but possibly really practical and a potential play place for your kid?
-Hone that converst into a chair so they can sit at the table as toddlers and not have to be too short?

My issues are I have a tiny house, and the dining/living rom are all one, so I want to care about style, but I could possibly get over that. Folding doesn't help because I don't even have a place to store a folded chair. I'm not sure I'm really into the whole booster seat idea b/c I don't have enough dining chairs as it is, don't really want to assign one to create the high chair. And I have NO storage, so something that is practicle until the next kid is attractive. Do they use it longer if they can eventually sit up to the table? Are the cool wood ones worth all that money??

Here are my options:
Chicco or similar standard plastic with comft seat, adjustable heights, reclining positions, and dishwasher-safe tray for the dishwasher I don't have.
Fisher-Price model that is supposedly similar to above, but without legs so it sits on a chair.
FisherPrice booster seat that doesn't recline or do other common ghigh chair functions, but folds up so small you may just take it to the restaurant with you?!?! I added this one because Nor praised it, and I always value the opinions of a person I really know over the anonymous epinions people.

Tripp Trapp. My favorite style-wise, comes in lots of colors with lots of cushion options, serves as a chair with lots of adjustable heights for toddlers, infant rail to hold babies in, and they just sit up to the table, no tray.
Svan. A hybrid. The features of the Tripp Trapp but with a tray with a plastic cover. I just like the look of the other a bit more.
Gabe in his little rocking chair that my mom gave him, where he can likely sit and eat reclining until he wants to feed himself.

Please share your wisdom and tell me what to buy. Feel free to comment Ashley and Heather, as you will be hauling it with you! BESOS!

OK, so as a mom of triplets and then one, I have some say on this subject! With the triplets, I went all out and bought each of them the big, clunky high chairs. It took up way too much room and was hard to clean.

I then sold the high chairs, bought three boosters and was in heaven. The boosters fold up easily and can even go in the dishwasher...SCORE!!

They are easy to store for your next child, too. For Brooke I just did the booster. If Gabe isn't sitting up yet, some boosters even recline. And, boosters are so practical that you can take them off easily if you need to use the dining room table. If you have company and need to use the chair, just place child on the floor in their booster. My kids were fine with that, too. Hope this helps!

I meant dining room chair, not table. Eeek!

Wow -- I've never seen some of these models! I have to say that I love my high chair. People at my law firm bought it so it was an expensive Peg Perego that reclines, adjusts height, and has a removable tray on top of the main tray. It does take up a bit of room in the kitchen though.

I think something that reclines is nice because you start feeding them rice cereal before they can sit up on their own -- you could just feed them though in the bouncy seat.

I also have a booster with it's own tray that I use when we travel on road trips and it works great. Already, though, McKay can get enough momentum to throw himself forward in it -- taking the chair and all.

That's my input. I'm still using that first high chair.

I agree with Nor and Seeleys, for you the booster is the way to go.

I have the expensive Peg and it's just big and takes up a lot of room and I wish I just had a booster. Actually, I do but it's in the attic but I'm scared of the attic because there are rats.

You'll change your mind in a year anyway, so don't plan ahead. There's always more buying to do.

Borrrrrrrring!!!!!!! give me posts with scandal and tales of grave robbing and pictures of Gabe. Or a series of photos of Mario in my favorite baby blue t-shirt featuring the most lovable of the bear family, the Polar Bear. You know the shirt I am talking about. call me because I have a really funny story about a dead dog!!!! Mary Carrick would crap her pants.

Forget the high chair, I want to hear the dog story. I like crapping my pants.

I choose something with a tray. You need it for self feeding. Also, you want it to be comfy because it takes babies a looong time to finish their food.

You're going to need a booster anyway when either 1)you add to your brood or 2)Gabe is ready to make the transition from highchair to eating at the table. We have the Peg too and it works great but space is not an issue. We also now have a booster, in retrospect, I would have gone that route from the beginning (plus, not that it matters most, but it will be easier for Ashley to transport now and for you down the road).

We have a booster seat with it's own tray that has worked great for both girls. You don't want them eating off the table because you need a place to contain the mess. It will also be nice for you to be able to take the chair with you to other people's houses, because trust me, feeding a baby on your lap is not fun.

Once Penelope got to be about 18 months I moved her into the Stokke Tripp Trapp, which we LOVE LOVE LOVE. The one we have wouldn't work with a little baby like Gabe, but I think they might now come with a 5 point harness and maybe even a tray?

So perhaps you should just get both!!!

I don't understand the question, and I refuse to respond (I hope you have seen Arrested Development).

I could give you advice on the following question: which tool is better for deglazing a skillet?...a wooden spoon, spatula, or a form? It is a wooden spoon in my not very humble opinion.

um... what takes up the least room... it's annoying being overcome by baby gear. And really - when do they tell you to start feeding them? Here it's 6 months... seems a bit old to me.

totally agree w/ Lindsay. Totally boring - who cares about this baby chair debate??? I'd rather hear about the dead dog story that would make Mary crap her pants. Please share!

High chairs are important. Beware the fancy cool designed one, I tested it and my baby flopped around in it and you need lots of add ons that are expensive. I like Paige's Peg, but it is hard to move around. The cool part about my booster is that has two trays (bi-level) so you can wash one in the dishwasher and still use it. Before I got the Fischer Price one, I used a Bumbo chair, they're cushy ergonomically designed, about 30$. It's good until about 5 months. You don't technically need a chair until he starts eating cheerios 5+ months, because it's easier to feed them on your lap -- one arm behind your back, one held in left hand, feed with right. Pam G taught me that pose, it gives you more control for shovelling food in.
I do like my run around scooter thing for the house.
Kids need lots of places to sit. Who knew?
P.S., can everybody please watch Arrested Development, all 3 seasons in order? It would make our exchanges more colorful as many phrases should be permanently part of the American vernacular.

I definitely think the booster idea is the way to go....I actually have fed my kids on top of the counter in their baby carseats for the first month of table food solid stuff, then when they sit up better, go to the booster seat...it is small and you can easily take it down for when company comes.

Wesley started eating at the table at age 3...until then, he was just fine being next to us in his own booster seat.

I loved your dress that you sewed! Fashionable and glamorous. You were motivated and I am impressed...

Stay away from that skull too...very uncomfortable to even look at!And I am glad you have converted back to Wal Mart...I love to browse it as well, even on a daily basis....

Enjoy that salsa!

Have you ever considered the ones that actually attach to your table? Doesn't take up floor space, the cover is removable and machine washable, and no trays to wash (just the table to wipe...or use a plastic placemat) I have one and really like it. Its a chicco.

I would also like to hear the story that Lindsay speaks of. I have a regular highchair, and I love it though it takes up a ton of space, which we have plenty of, but i just hate that it is always out, it would be nice to have something that you could tuck away.

Also tell Lindsay she needs to start blogging- her blog is empty and thats disappointing

OK OK OK - so the booster is the way to go. . . as long as it has a tray, because just putting them up to the table is a big mess. (Trust the mother of 5 and grandmother of 4 and counting!)

I saw that "Bumbo" thing in Walmart the other night and I think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread!! I would have loved having that when mine were little to help them sit up before they are able to do it on their own. And, it looks like you could even put it in the bathtub (or kitchen sink which I admit is my favorite place to bathe babies now that leaning over the bathtub is such a pain in my middleaged back).

I have the second one you posted on your blog and LOVE it (it reclines and is fully cleanable so it never looks crusty like most baby gear), but as soon as the baby was wanting to sit up at the table with us we downgraded to an inflatable booster seat (which is wipeable and deflates to the size of a purse). I hate clunky baby gear!
